The People of Gibraltar

1840s - H. Winkles - Gothic Revival

Henry Winkles was an English illustrator, engraver and printer. He helped found the first steel engraving studio in Germany and in 1836 also helped produce and engrave three volumes of Winkles's Architectural and Picturesque Illustrations of the Cathedral Churches of England and Wales. It was a book that helped revive Gothic architecture in 19th century Britain and - appropriately - the only two pictures of Gibraltar by him that I have been able to find are both thoroughly Gothic in character.

Winkles plan of various British possessions follows the same sort of style.
