Matthew
Calbraith Perry was the Commodore of the sloop-of-war USS Concord. The ship took part in a Mediterranean cruise
with the US squadron during 1830 to 1832. Perry
ordered a series of drawings and sketches to be taken from places visited by
the Concord which he later published
in a quarto album entitled Costumes of the Mediterranean. The
portrait drawings are not signed by the artist, but are attributable to Edward Young. Perry later presented the album to
his eldest daughter Sarah.
