1934 - Dr Leo Wehrli – The Rock of Gibraltar
Swiss born Leo Wehrli (1870-1954) has been variously described as a geologist, a teacher and an explorer. He also appears to have been a keen photographer as he left a large collection of about 15 000 slides, some of them hand-coloured by his wife Anna Margaretha Frey, who was generally known as Grethi.

Among these photographic slides are a collection of views of the Rock - dated 1934 – as well as one each from 1936 and 1938 respectively all of them taken from whatever ship he was travelling in at the time.
Wehrli’s slide numbering for the 1934 series suggests that the ship was travelling west to east from the Atlantic, before entering the Gut and anchoring in the Bay. The photograph of the local tender suggests that he may have visited Gibraltar. Unfortunately, whether he did so or not he does not seem to have taken any photographs of the town.
