Prehistory

711 – Moorish Conquerors (See LINK

Tarik is more commonly referred to as Tarik ibn Ziyad. The fort or Moorish Castle was not built by him. (See LINK

1462 – Spanish Conquerors  (See LINK)

1704 – British Conquerors  (See LINK

1726 – Counterattack  (See LINK)

The “counterattack” actually took place in 1704 during the 12th Siege of Gibraltar. The 13th Siege – to which the author of the text was presumably and mistakenly referring to – took place in 1727 and not 1726. Also, the engraving which is by Gustave Doré (see LINK) shows smugglers carry goods from Gibraltar along a perilous mountain pass towards Ronda during the mid 19th century. It does not refer to the episode suggested by the caption.
