Digital copies of an unusual set of nine carte de visite style photos of Gibraltar were recently unearthed by my friend Alex Panayote in a somewhat unlikely site - the Detroit Institute of Art. Both the publisher and date of publication are unknown but the photographer is - he was James Hollingworth Mann, active in Gibraltar during the late 19th century and producer of a large number of photographs of the Rock.
The numbering on the cards - 1 to 37 - suggests that the missing 28 were also created by Mann although not all of them necessarily of Gibraltar as he also took several of nearby towns in Spain. Here they are.
